Raising Healthy Raptors: September is Suicide Awareness Month

Did you know:
“Asking your child directly about suicide will not increase their risk, or plant the idea. It will create an opportunity to offer support, and let them know you care enough to have the conversation.” (American Foundation For Suicide Prevention)

“Suicidal ideation (suicidal thoughts) are thoughts or ideas centered around death or suicide. Experiencing suicidal ideation doesn’t mean you’re going to kill yourself, but it can be a warning sign. Treatment is available.” (Cleveland Clinic)

Conversations Save Lives! For help in how to approach these conversations, check out the amazing resources on Talk Away the Dark. If you or a loved on is in a crisis, call 911 or call/text the suicide hotline at 988.

Does your employer match donations?

Did you know that your employer’s matching gift program can substantially increase the impact of your donation to PFLASA?

Many companies have a Corporate Social Responsibility Program that matches employee charitable contributions, creating a positive impact that benefits organizations like PFLASA. When a donor gives and their employer matches that gift, PFLASA receives double the impact from a single donation. Essentially, corporate matching gifts are a win-win, allowing your employer to support the nonprofits you value while providing funding to further PFLASA’s mission.

Double your impact!! Please ask about your company’s charitable matching program through your HR department or employee portal. If you have any questions, feel free to email the PFLASA treasurer at Treasurer@pflasa.org.

The No Hassle Fundraiser has kicked off its 2025-26 campaign!

Support LASA with the No Hassle Fundraiser

At LASA, our magnet school offers unparalleled advanced classes and unique programs that set us apart. However, sometimes district funding falls short of covering the specialized materials, equipment, and resources our students need to excel. PFLASA (Parents and Friends of LASA) helps to cover the shortage with donations from parents just like you.

Your tax-deductible donation to PFLASA plays a crucial role in maintaining the exceptional quality of our school. Every gift truly counts, regardless of size. Thanks to your generosity, PFLASA ensures that LASA students have the tools they need to succeed, and your continued support makes it all possible.

Make a difference today! Your gift, big or small, has the power to transform our students’ educational experiences. Please donate at www.pflasa.org/give!

PFLASA Meeting

Please join us for our next PFLASA meeting, we’d love to see you!
Date: Friday, September 5
Time: 8:15 AM
Location: Portable by the tennis courts

We’ll share what PFLASA is doing, opportunities to volunteer, committee updates and as always we’ll have coffee and tea.

Host a Great Gathering!

Great Gatherings (GGs) are an excellent way to build community and a fun way to help PFLASA’s fundraising efforts. So, grab some friends and host a party!

Hosts incur costs for the gathering and the ticket sales go to PFLASA. GGs can be held for your grade level to get to know your parent cohort, open to a mix of classes, or for the entire LASA population. As host, you determine your audience and size of your event. We suggest a ticket price of $30/ guest, but each event is unique and we are happy to work with you if you feel your event meets a lower or higher ticket price.

Some hosts come up with a theme but there is no pressure. Some ideas from the past: wine, beer or scotch tastings, yoga class, balloon twisting, blackjack, V day, Halloween.. You can elect to host in your home or at a venue.

How to host? Simply fill out the GGs Interest Form with all the dates and details of your event and someone will get in touch with you promptly!

Raising Healthy Raptors: Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders in Teens

Whether your kid is new to LASA, or adjusting to new teachers and new expectations, or in the thick of college applications, there are lots of reasons that their anxiety may be spiking right now. Please check out the Google slide presentation Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders in Teens which was put together by PFLASA’s Raising Healthy Raptors Committee. In it, you will learn strategies to help your teen manage the physical and mental manifestations of anxiety (including panic attacks), and get some insight into whether your teen’s anxiety responses seem to be at a normal and productive level or may be shifting into a more disordered, non-productive cycle. This presentation can also be accessed under the Parenting Connection Corner section at https://pflasa.org/wellness/.
