Raising Healthy Raptors: Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders in Teens

Whether your kid is new to LASA, or adjusting to new teachers and new expectations, or in the thick of college applications, there are lots of reasons that their anxiety may be spiking right now. Please check out the Google slide presentation Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders in Teens which was put together by PFLASA’s Raising Healthy Raptors Committee. In it, you will learn strategies to help your teen manage the physical and mental manifestations of anxiety (including panic attacks), and get some insight into whether your teen’s anxiety responses seem to be at a normal and productive level or may be shifting into a more disordered, non-productive cycle. This presentation can also be accessed under the Parenting Connection Corner section at https://pflasa.org/wellness/.

PFLASA leadership update — New President

PFLASA has a new president. Anna Land had to step down as president due to health issues. She will continue to work with PFLASA on the No Hassle Fundraiser and other initiatives, and we are grateful for her continued support and work. Sarah Romo de Vivar will be serving a 1-year interim presidency in Anna’s place. As the former president of PTSA; past chair of several PFLASA events; and long-time, frequent PFLASA volunteer; Sarah brings to the table a great deal of leadership experience and familiarity with PFLASA functions and events. We are grateful to her for being willing to serve in another demanding leadership role after serving in one last year. I am looking forward to working with both of these amazing women in the year ahead!

Save the Date! 3rd Annual Gift Card Gala / Moms HH on 9/27

Dear Raptor Moms,

You are all cordially invited to join us for the 3rd Annual Gift Card Gala on Saturday Sept. 27th, benefiting the Class of 2026 Project Graduation fundraising efforts. This event is a traditional PFLASA Great Gathering (more on that later) and as with many things at LASA, this is a pay-it-forward act—and open to moms of ALL Classes!

In order to “enter” this Gala, we are kindly asking you to bring an unused gift card (suggested value of $25 or more) as your “ticket fee”.
We will take all of these gift cards and add them to the Class of 2026 Online Auction in November.

Have unused Gift Cards laying around your house? You can donate those too! If you are going out to buy a new gift card for this event, please consider a restaurant, a store or somewhere popular that you know will sell in the auction.

Please view details and sign-up here.

Start of PFLASA Study Groups for 2025-2026 School Year

Who: Current Parents and Students of LASA High School

What: PFLASA Study Groups

When: We are slated to start on Tuesday, September 2nd. Tutors will be available to work in small groups or individually with students from 4:15 pm to 6:15 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays

The general schedule for subjects offered is below:

  • Chemistry: T, W, Th from 4:15 pm – 6:15 pm
  • Physics: T, W, Th from 4:15 pm – 6:15 pm
  • Biology: T, W. Th from 4:15 pm – 6:15 pm

Where: LASA Library; look for the signage as you enter through the library.

Why: These started a number of years ago to give students another place to ask questions and receive support in specific subjects. Think of it as small group private tutoring—free to the student! We have seen this service help students make great academic strides when they attend regularly.

SchoolPool for Carpool Options

LASA is working with SchoolPool, a carpool matching program. This is a program which can help you find others in your area and set up carpools to and from bus hubs and/or LASA. It can also be helpful to coordinate for afterschool activities, or LASA sporting event.

To get started, simply fill out the interest form using the QR code, or use this link.

Teachers and Staff Luncheon

Thank you LASA Community for helping make our “Final Lunchdown” a total success! We had so many happy Teachers and Staff come through and enjoy the delicious food you brought. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers that helped serve, set up and clean up, we couldn’t do any of this without everyone’s help.

URGENT – NEED VOLUNTEERS

We need Hospitality Chair or Chairs for next year now! The last chance to shadow one of these events is tomorrow, Thursday May 22nd. The Hospitality Committee hosts just four events a school year. The idea of “shadowing” is to learn from the people who have done it.

We also need a few more members to join the Zip Code Committee. This group helps connect LASA families within their neighborhoods using Google Groups, making it easier to coordinate carpools, local gatherings, and more. This important yet low-commitment role is performed remotely and requires only a small amount of time. Volunteers take turns on a rotating schedule to assign new members to the appropriate zip code group(s) and send out welcome emails. No prior experience with Google Groups is needed—just a basic familiarity with navigating Google Sheets.

These are both low commitment roles that are essential to PFLASA’s functioning. Contact president@pflasa.org.
