Jacob Oakes was a LASA student from 2012-2015. He passed away July 16, 2015 following a two year battle with depression. Throughout this battle, the LASA community rallied to support him. When Jake first reached out for help, it was a LASA counselor he approached. When Jake returned to school following a 10 week absence for residential treatment, the school welcomed him and did all they could to set him up for both academic and emotional success. When we voiced concern that some classmates might be not-so-nice about why he had been away from school, Jake replied: “LASA isn’t like that.” And he was 100% right. LASA was the first school where he felt accepted and we are thankful for every day Jake was a part of this remarkable community. – The Oakes Family

In appreciation for all that LASA did for Jake, Jake’s family is thrilled to announce the Jacob Oakes Memorial Fund. In partnership with PFLASA and in cooperation with the LASA counseling staff, this special fund within PFLASA will provide the counseling staff with monetary support for their wellness initiatives to ensure that LASA counselors have the resources they need to help preserve the mental health and safety of every student.

Funds donated to the memorial will be made directly available to LASA Wellness counselors to use at their, and the LASA administration’s, discretion in their support of LASA students in mental health and wellness priorities.
